SHORTS ON THE BIG SCREEN – SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

Sunday 13th June from 7pm – 10pm June

“Shorts on the Green” returns to Circle on Cavill on Sunday 13th June from 7pm – 10pm. This is one of the most exciting Short Film Festivals to be held on the Gold Coast.

Targeting local film makers of all ages and skill levels shorts on the green is a fantastic vehicle for emerging talent to screen their film publicly, on the Circle on Cavill big screen and receive much sought after industry recognition.

Approximately 12 finalist films will be screened on the big night. Films will be of any genre but have to be less than 8 minutes in length so it is back to back screenings for the community to kick back and enjoy! There will be great prizes up for grabs including a 50 inch Plasma TV.

State of Origin Game 3 – LIVE on the Big Screen

Congratulations Queensland! That’s a record 5th straight Origin title in 2010! Come support them for game three to make it the first clean sweep since 1995!

Circle on Cavill will be showing the game live on the outdoor big screen and welcome everyone along to this family friendly event!

Bring a blanket and relax on the grassed area and a limited number of beanbags will be provided by Circle on Cavill.

Digiquarium by Jason Nelson

Come and see international digital artist JASON NELSON

Digiquarium will see internationally renowned artist & Griffith University lecturer, Jason Nelson, residing in a shopfront within the Circle on Cavill precinct while completing one of his incredible digital artworks.

To be displayed on the accompanying big screen (the largest outdoor screen in Queensland), visitors can chat & interact with Jason while he creates his megapixel masterpiece & even add their input as it develops.

A mixture of technology, poetry collages, images, sounds, movement & incorporating creative input from the public & like minded digital artists, this work will no doubt be as impressive as his award winning others.

On May 22 between 6-9pm, Jason will unveil his final digital creation in real time on the Big Screen, accompanied by light installations & a digital exhibition showcasing local emerging artists. Throughout the Festival, Jason’s associates will also be conducting a symphony of light, featuring a spontaneous roving projection show weaving its way in & out of the streets & laneways of Surfers Paradise, surprising all who come across it! digiquarium will transform the Circle on Cavill precinct & surrounding public spaces into a creative hub, bringing an artistic pulse to central Surfers Paradise.

ARTIST BIO

Jason Nelson is a digital & hypermedia poet & artist. Born from the relatively computer-less land of farmers & spring thunderstorms (Oklahoma in the good ol’ US of A), Jason somehow stumbled into creating awkward & wonderous digital poems & interactive stories of odd lives. Currently he teaches Net Art & Electronic Literature at Griffith University on the Gold Coast. Aside from coaxing his students into breaking, playing & morphing their creativity with all manner of technologies, he exhibits widely in galleries & journals around the globe; New York, Mexico, Taiwan, Spain, Singapore &Brazil – in establishments including – FILE, ACM, LEA, ISEA, ACM, ELO & dozens of other acronyms. But in the web based realm where his work resides, Jason is most proud of the millions of visitors his artworks attract each year. He challenges conceptions & breaks boundaries, & now you can see it at the Surfers Paradise Festival.

Barcelona, 25 January 2010 – Scarlett Johansson, one of the most internationally acclaimed actresses of the moment, is once again starring in the new MANGO campaign, this time for the new Spring 2010 season.

On this occasion, the photo shoot took place in New York city, where the actress modelled the new designs of the Spanish fashion firm. Once again, Scarlett Johansson was sexy and elegant through the lens of the acclaimed photographer Mario Sorrenti, who received styling advice from Damián Sánchez, the Creative Director of MANGO. Hairstyling and make-up was provided by Bob Recine and Stéphane Marais, respectively.

The new MANGO collection combines naturalness and simplicity in its silhouettes, while experimenting with the contrasts and volumes of the lines. The result transports us to the “new look” age, in a voyage around the Mediterranean, in which the range of blues and greys combine with whites, natural tones and touches of red. This apparent “retro-marine”, where stripes and spots appear alongside each other, is transformed into an urban and contemporary look with the addition of sportswear details, owing to the technical forms or fabrics, or the comfortable and loose appearance of the garments, which, on occasions, are taken in at the waist.

Inevitably, this quest for comfort and functionality leads us to garments from the male wardrobe: more flowing suits which contrast with very feminine volumes, achieved through drapes, gathers and pleats.

To add richness to these pure lines, natural or technical fabrics and textures are used to give this look: lace, English embroidery, braiding, rafia and ribbons, which give a traditional touch far from the rustic and closer to the sophisticated.

At the same time, we encounter timeless garments such as the safari jacket which, with its romantic air, is both functional and sexy. Khaki becomes the base colour for the season, for both men and women.

During the launch of the new collection, which took place in Madrid on 11 November, Scarlett Johansson confessed: “I love working with MANGO. This is the third campaign I have done with them. The photographer, Mario Sorrenti, makes me feel very comfortable: the sessions are great fun. I see MANGO as a casual firm, with lots of combinations of garments, fresh and youthful”.

About her projects, the actress told us: “Among my projects, I have a play on Broadway, “A view from the bridge”. I am really happy, but I’m still doing rehearsals. I didn’t have time to get nervous. I don’t know what I’ll be doing in 10 years time, I cannot imagine, I suppose I’ll still be working in film and I hope I remain in good health. Although I’m an actress and a singer, I feel I am an actress above all, it’s my profession. My latest record, “Break up”, is a record by friends more than a professional one. I recorded it with Pete Yorn, who is a friend of mine. I love sharing it with people and I hope they like it”.

World’s largest short film festival

World’s largest short film festival hits the big screen at Circle on Cavill

Movie Extra Tropfest is set to roll on Sunday 21st February on the outdoor big screen at Circle on Cavill, Surfers Paradise. The world’s largest short film festival will feature 16 short listed films from an array of some of Australia’s best upcoming filmmakers.

The festival is one of Australia’s iconic cultural events, which began with humble beginnings in the early nineties in an inner city Sydney local, the ‘Tropicana Café’. Creator and founder John Polson quickly realised the event’s potential and set up the foundations for what is now the largest outdoor short film festival globally.

Broadcast from the lush surrounds of Sydney’s Domain and beamed around the country via simultaneous satellite to sites such as Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Brisbane and the ever popular Gold Coast venue ‘Circle on Cavill’ Surfers Paradise.

Surfers Paradise Alliance along with Circle on Cavill are proud to present ‘Movie Extra Tropfest’ to the Gold Coast audience and are excited that a Queensland film duo have made the cut as one of the top 16 finalists.

QLD finalist film, ‘Testicle’ is a quirky animation film by Sheldon Lieberman and Igor Coric who originally met at the Ottawa International Animation festival in 2004. A sneak preview line from the film “Spike is only a few months old and missing a testicle” creates visions of intrigue to be unveiled on the night!
